Being a student, and not having a classroom of my own yet, I have to base my education philosophy on what I personally like or dislike in the classroom. I have been a student for a very long time, which means that I have seen many different ways to approach teaching. Some ways, like hands-on work and small group discussions, have worked tremendously well for me, while others, like lecture and non-activity based learning, have not worked well at all. Not only did these different teaching styles teach me which ways helped me  learn the best, but it also reminded me that Multiple Intelligences are present and people do not all learn the same way that I do. The knowledge of different learners means that I must be able to be flexible in my classroom to assure that all of my students are getting the most out of my class as they can. I cannot only teach in one way, but instead, I must be able to change my teaching styles to ensure that my students get the most out of my lessons.

Luckily, my major in Communication Studies and Theatre allows me to be very open ended in the way that I teach. While teaching drama or speech, no right or wrong way is present. While I do not learn as well with a straight lecture, my area of study allows me to lecture some lessons to help the students who learn that way. I am also able to teach by example and letting the students get "hands on" with what they are learning. I personally learn the best when I am able to get out of my desk and move to learn, so I plan on using this technique as much as possible to keep my classroom fresh, exciting, and new.

I also believe that technology in the classroom is very important, especially since computers and other technologies are sky rocketing around us. Technology in the classroom will benefit both teacher and students, since the students will be able to use this technology in their personal lives as well. These advances will allow me to emphasize my lectures and lesson plans with PowerPoint, photography, and the Internet to show how Theatre and Speech Communication are all around us in our everyday lives.

With so many options facing me as I go out to get a job teaching, I am eager and excited to see how teaching methods will continue to change. I am also looking forward to see how many different ones I can use in my classroom.
